Marble Falls is named for
a 22 foot ledge of pink Texas marble on the Colorado River, now
hidden by Lake Marble Falls. Located in the heart of the Texas
Hill Country, Marble Falls is only 45 miles west of Austin and
85 miles north of San Antonio. Lake Marble Falls is part of the
Highland Lakes Chain, the largest chain of lakes in Texas.
General Adam R. Johnson traveled to Texas in 1854, viewed the
falls and surrounding countryside, and knew he wanted to make
Marble Falls his home. He returned to his native Kentucky to fight
in the Civil War, tragically losing his eyesight. Never forgetting
his dream, Johnson returned to Marble Falls and officially founded
the city in 1887.
On the western edge of town stands Granite Mountain. Granite
from this huge stone monolith was quarried and donated to the
building of the Texas State Capital in Austin in exchange for
a railway connection to Austin.
Today Marble Falls is enjoyed by young and old alike. Water sports
abound on the area lakes. You can relax and gaze into the peaceful
water, enjoy a leisurely swim, go motor boating or ride a personal
water craft, take a trip across the water in a sail boat, water
ski, or even enjoy parasailing. Plenty of parks provide opportunities
to sit back and enjoy the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. The
city offers three parks by the lake including Johnson Park, which
features a giant playscape for the kids. Just 10 minutes away
from the city, Longhorn Caverns State Park offers a tour of a
huge underground cave. The Marble Falls area boasts seven year-round
golf courses including a beautiful course in Horseshoe Bay designed
by Robert Trent Jones. You can also find championship tennis facilities
and some of the best fishing and hunting in Texas. For a little
slower pace, stroll down Main Street and delight in the shops
that preserve a little piece of the past. When you get tired,
stop for an ice cream at an old fashioned soda fountain.
Marble Falls is known as the business hub of the Highland Lakes
region. Shopping abounds with boutiques, antique shops, and a
24-hour Super Wal-Mart. When you get hungry, your biggest problem
will be deciding which tantalizing restaurant to choose. Enjoy
spicy Mexican food, a special mix of Italian and Texan, a little
Cajun, some mouth waterin barbecue, or a home cooked meal
at the famed Bluebonnet Cafe. This is just a sampling of the many
types of food you will find in town to tempt your taste buds.
With all the beauty of the countryside you will feel closer to
the Creator and the area includes over a dozen churches where
you can worship.
Come visit, come stay, and discover Marble Falls!
